Oral history interview with Charles Kaplan, Nov. 7 and Nov. 11, 1982.

1982

Kaplan discusses his parents' emigration from Russia to Toronto, where the family settled and became philanthropists in the Jewish community. He tells of moving to the United States after earning a medical degree, marrying an American, and serving as a psychiatrist in the U.S. Army for four years. In 1947 Kaplan moved his family to Seattle, setting up practice as a pediatrician. He comments on differences between Toronto and Seattle Jewish communities. Kaplan also describes his participation in establishing the Reform congregation of Beth Am, and differences between the north-end Jewish community and other segments of Seattle's Jewish population. He also recounts the decision to build a new Jewish community center and his belief that it led to greater harmony and cohesiveness in the community. Kaplan also discusses the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, its role in the Jewish Community Center and the greater community. He describes conflict between different organizations, the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League, the Federation defense committees, and the establishment of the Jewish Community Relations Council. Kaplan also offers insight to the evolution of community attitudes and power roles in Seattle's Jewish community.
